Beautiful decorative table lamps, above, add
warmth to any room in winter. Even though winter
doesn'tt officially start until Monday,
the shortest day of the year, the days have been
growing colder and darker for some time now.
You dont have to fret and bemoan the absence
of the sun, though. You can light up your house
this season with elaborate lamps and exquisite
chandeliers.
This is probably the best season to buy
lamps since its getting darker and darker,
says Sherrie Davidson of Hermitage Lighting Gallery
in Nashville. The store has about 4,000 lamps
and fixtures to choose from with 400-600 new pieces
arriving every month.
These beautiful handcrafted lamps start as low
as $50 for a simple study lamp and go all the
way to $75,000 for an original Tiffany chandelier.
You can choose among ornate flush mounts, crystal
chandeliers and magnificent candelabra. According
to Davidson, festive lampshades with elegant motifs
in pearls, tassels and beads, and outdoor lamps
are most popular this time of year.
Lamps, whether they are decorative table lamps
or functional floor lamps or antique chandeliers,
do more than just illuminate. They create ambience.
Select from a range of ornate handcrafted lamps
made of wood, cast iron, alabaster, crystal and
marble to give your home a new look for the season.
The latest trends, Davidson says, are pharmacy
lamps and task lamps that help seniors see better
and can be used for specific tasks such as sewing
or embroidering.
The most important aspect is that the lamps complement
the interiors of your home. If you have plenty
of antiques, use vintage lamps to enhance the
look of the house.
Hermitage Lighting Gallery has two original Louis
Comfort Tiffany lamps that were handcrafted by
the master craftsman back in the 1900s. One is
worth $75,000. The store also has a lot of reproductions
that are colorful and functional.
The Tiffany lamps are so vibrant and colorful,
they help recreate nature in the living room and
are perfect for winter, says Steve Falk,
the Tennessee representative for Quoizel Collectibles.
So go ahead, light up the season. Decorative
table lamps might just help you get through t
he winter season that much easier, so brighten
up your day.
