Home lighting: We've come a long way from those
dingy days when the only options of home lighting
varied somewhere between a 30-watt, and, if you
really wanted to push the boat out, a 100-watt
bulb.
We no longer just seek home lighting that helps
us find our way around in the dark.
Today, home lighting is much more than a practical
element in our homes, it is as much of a style
statement as our sofas. Lights not only enhance
the colour and mood of a room, they can also be
an art installation.
It all depends on what you want your home lighting
for.
Do you want sultry, emotive home lighting? A
striking ceiling centrepiece? Unobtrusive subtle
wall lights? Repetition lighting? A simple freestanding
standard lamp? An installation in the form of
a light box?
The days of a single pendant lamp swinging from
the middle of a ceiling have well and truly gone.
No bare swinging bulbs in modern home lighting.
The once stark glare has been phased out by
innovative home lighting designers who have switched
us on to a whole new way of lighting up.
Home lighting is now a visual experience.
One of the current favourite's of the interior
home lighting world is that sought after statement
of grandeur, the chandelier.
Glass droplets are a must-have in any decadent
boudoir at the moment - a girl's home lighting
equivalent to a pair of Jimmy Choo's (apparently).
The more decadent the better.
However, the new chandelier perhaps is simply
an updated version from the old school of glamorous
home lighting.
New kids on the block are adopting a more edgy,
modern look using a myriad of materials including
Perspex, chain mail and feathers.
Neon lights are big news at the moment and the
brighter the better. Used in art installations
and light boxes, neon is making its presence known.
Think 'downtown' New York deli signs (failing
that think Kath's Caff in Eastenders but a bit
more stylish!) that flash on and off until the
early hours when the steam comes up from the gates.
Suck UK, a dynamic design duo based in London,
have been leaders in the use of light and art
combination. Their affordable and illuminating
home lighting designs were a star attraction at
100% Design.
Visit www.suck.uk.com for a glimpse of their
work and pay attention to the pretty Twinkle Light,
their very modern Slide Light and, of course,
their much sought after Sexy neon mirrors.
Head-turning designs in home lighting are currently
being shown at a new art exhibition being held
in the North-east showcasing artworks by artists
who use light in a direct way in their work.
The exhibition, Some Versions of Light will include
major works by renowned artists such as Sam Taylor
Wood, who was short listed for a Turner Prize,
Saltburn born artist Richard Foster and visually
stunning photographic artists Rob and Nick Carter.
The exhibition, organised by Greville Worthington
and the St Paulinus Project, runs from 18th May
until the 22nd June at the Telephone Repeater
Station, Brompton on Swale, Richmond in North
Yorkshire.
